Wrinkle relaxing injections

Wrinkle relaxing injections

Wrinkle relaxing injections called botulinum toxin are prescribed to prevent muscle contraction in various areas of the face, smoothing out existing lines and preventing new lines forming.  Main areas of treatment include forehead lines, frown lines and around the outer areas of the eyes (crow’s feet).

Very fine needles are used so there is very little discomfort and you can resume most of your usual activities immediately after treatment. Botulinum toxin type A is a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum that blocks the release of a neurotransmitter acetylcholine necessary for initiating muscle contraction. It begins to work within a few days but can take as long as 14-21 days for the full paralysing effects to show through. Botulinum toxin injections are not permanent, so we recommend repeat treatments at 3-4 monthly intervals to maintain the effects.

Thousands of these treatments are performed every year – noticeable from 2-14 days afterwards and lasting several months. To complement the lasting results of the treatment, we recommend the use of SPF50 sun protection cream.

Over time, with regular wrinkle relaxing injections, the muscles will get thinner and weaken, which means they are less able to create the wrinkles in the first place.  This side effect is particularly useful for treating overactive muscles that have become too bulky over time such as in the jaw area.

It is important to know that some patients with very powerful muscles may not see a complete relaxation of the targeted area, but subsequent injections will further weaken them.

 Treatment time: 30 mins

Full onset of results: 2 weeks

  Duration of results: 3-4 months
